Our Hiring Process

Komaza is seeking driven, top-performing talent to lead our vision of establishing Africa's largest forestry company in partnership with smallholder farmers. We have designed a unique, rigorous process to see if there's a great match. Past applicants have reported that this process is longer and more time-intensive than other companies', but in exchange for that time, they get deep exposure to imagine and evaluate what it would be like to work with the Komaza team in this new role. We have found that this process has had a huge positive impact on our team, and has increased both promotion and retention rates of selected candidates. But it's not for everyone - we recognize there are fantastic contributors out there that might not have time to join us in this journey. Please review the below. Should you choose to apply (we hope you do!) we take it as your commitment to participate in the following activities.


We have a strong preference for CVs that are 1 page or less, representing only the top experiences that are most relevant to the role you are applying for, rather than a comprehensive list of your entire professional history.

We often received hundreds - and sometimes thousands - of CVs for each role, and have been consistently impressed with level and breadth of talent who apply! Unfortunately, only a handful of candidates can be selected, so we are often unable to proceed candidates that have great work experience.

Here are a few tips on what we look for in a CV when applying for a role at Komaza: 

  • Content is concise and easy to follow. We can quickly identify education, role titles, companies and years worked. Work experience is listed in reverse chronological order.
  • Excellent formatting including easy-to-read font, neatly aligned layout, and professional-level grammar. 
  • Experience is directly attributed to the applicant (rather than using “we” for work done in a team).
  • Experience is relevant and outcomes-, not skills-based. We want to know about what you have owned and accomplished. Rather than focusing on skills or activities, please share what outcomes you have achieved for your past employers. For example: "increased sales revenue by 25% in 10 months," or "built a new GIS database logging the location of 8,000 farms."

Video Introduction

Komaza uses an application tracking system called JobVite that includes a feature to record a short video introduction. Videos help us share a snapshot of you with multiple Komaza teammates, rather than a single interviewer. While some candidates have (understandably) reported that this can feel impersonal, we encourage you to imagine you’re talking to a friendly Komaza employee on the other side of the screen. Think of this video as an introduction rather than an interview, it's your chance to greet the team and share more about your interest in the role. For those yearning for more human contact, don't worry - the final stages of the interview process involve multiple phone, or often in-person, interviews as a chance to connect directly.


Along with the video, you will be asked to fill out a short online questionnaire that should take you no more than 10 minutes to complete. Your answers to this questionnaire provide us with additional information early in the recruitment process that will confirm the role you’re applying for is a good fit for you. The questionnaire captures answers that are helpful for us to be on the same page about early in the recruitment process, such as timing of availability and willingness to relocate for a role. While the questionnaires for each role are similar, some questions are modified to suit the specific position. 

Work Assignment 

The work assignment is your opportunity to step into a day in the life of the role! Each work assignment is carefully crafted to identify opportunities for you to showcase your strengths and your skills as they directly relate to the position you’ve applied for. While these technical deliverables can sometimes be challenging, they are also often an exciting activity for candidates who already have an intuitive sense that this particular role and this innovative company is right for them. As with all stages of our recruitment process, we greatly appreciate the time candidates take out of their already busy lives to engage with us. We design these interactions to be as fruitful for the candidates as they are for us at Komaza.

Nairobi Day 

The Nairobi Day is your first chance to meet members of the Komaza team in-person. During the Nairobi Day, you will receive a more detailed briefing on role and its important contributions to the exciting strategic and operational goals of the company. Please come prepared for both additional technical assessments as well as a one-on-one interview. There will also be opportunities for you to ask any questions you have about the position, the team and department, Komaza as a company, and Kilifi as a place to live. 

Komaza Day 

The top candidates for a role are invited to visit us in beautiful Kilifi! During this all-expenses-paid trip to the Kenyan coast, you will get the chance to interact with your future supervisor and team, as well as spend a day at the office and tour the town. Although these visits can be quite intense, they are an excellent opportunity for candidates to get to know what it would be like to work and live in Kilifi. You’ll have a full day of office and town tours, interactions with your future team over lunch and in meetings, and one-on-one discussions with members of the management team where we can get to know you better and answer additional questions in person.
